Soothe and Embolden the Soul

In the gorgeous cinematic film Bright Star, there is a scene where the poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne discuss poetry and how to understand it. The imagery is captivating. Fanny Brawne: I still don’t know how to work out a poem. John Keats: A poem needs understanding through the senses. The point of diving in a lake is not immediately to swim to the shore; it’s to be in the lake, to luxuriate in the sensation of water. You do not work the lake out. It is an experience beyond thought. Poetry soothes and emboldens the soul to accept mystery. I love his description of encountering a poem. He encourages the reader to take time and gently listen to the poem. Experience the words within the rhythm. Enjoy contentment within the experience. Comprehension can come in time. Eventually there does come a time with a poem when the understanding of its construction will deepen and broaden the reader’s enjoyment. Not every poem requires the effort, yet many poems, like Shakespeare’s sonnets that have layers of meaning, are enhanced with a little knowledge. Consider it this way: Luxuriating in a lake is more enjoyable when you know how to swim and have no fear of drowning. So, here is the question. How do we â€Å"riddle† out a poem to understand its structure and context? For that I highly recommend the Grammar of Poetry as an excellent curriculum to guide you through the process. The complete package comes with a Teacher’s Manual, Student Book, and (best of all) in-depth DVDs that teach the building blocks of poetry. Structured as nine modules with a final exam, the course uses the classical methodology of imitation to teach students about a broad range of poetic elements, including ten tropes, rhyme, meter, poetic vocabulary, and more. Upon completing the course, students will have a thorough understanding of the grammar of poetry. This understanding will help them to better appreciate the fullness of poetry, from the simple to the sublime. Instead of simply standing in the lake, they will be swimming confidently in its waters. Taking the time to listen, read, and memorize poetry has made it to my to-do list as the busy season of summer and work begins to build. During this hectic time, I find a sophisticated poem soothing to me. Keats’ words ring true. Poetry really does â€Å"soothe and embolden the soul to accept mystery.† Whishaw, Ben, actor. Questions On Domestic Abuse And Domestic Violence - 913 Words

Gagnà © suggested nine events of instruction that facilitate learning. If I was and instructor attempting to lecture on the topic of domestic abuse, Gagnà © would suggest that I first need to gain the attention of my students. To do this, I will need to provide a stimulus that grabs their attention. I will show a short YouTube video that shows different men and women’s experiences with domestic violence. The video then will end with domestic violence statistics and what you can do to help someone that you feel might be a victim of domestic violence. Second, I must inform the learners of the objective so that students are aware of what they will know after learning the information and will be able to sort the information that I provide to†¦show more content†¦I will present the domestic violence content via different YouTube videos, images, bulleted lecture slides, and examples so that students are able to see the content in various ways. Fifth, I will need to provide learning guidance. In this event, I will help students organize the incoming information in a meaningful way. I can do this by modeling the information by showing demonstrations of domestic violence, providing additional visual images of the victims of domestic violence, and showing the students non-examples of domestic violence. Sixth, I will need to elicit performance. This event requires students to perform the knowledge that they have learned. To do this, I can assign students to small groups, where they will be required to collaborate with their group to build a demonstration, or example, of domestic violence. This can be done via role-play, PowerPoint, or other sources. The group work will allow students to build on their knowledge from what their peers know, as well as allow them to show that the information that I have presented to them has been internalized. Seventh, I will need to provide informative feedback to my students. I will offer this feedback by using a rubric to score their group demonstrations. The rubric will not only contain a numerical grade value, but also a comment section that I will write informative

Explain the purpose of agreeing objectives and deadlines when researching information. If possible, refer to specific examples from research tasks you have worked on to support your answer. It is important to agree objectives when doing research to ensure that the required information is researched. By having these objectives agreed, is allows the researcher to focus on getting the desire result and thus not wasting resources and time. Objectives which should be agreed are: †¢ Deadline †¢ What information is required †¢ Who will be reviewing the information †¢ How is the information to be displayed A personal example of this is the data requirements for a campaign that has been requested. The full details of what is required of me, and the outcomes are detailed within the mailing design – Appendix 1. This document will have been produced with my feedback as well as stakeholders, to ensure that we are all looking at the same outcome. They can be easily shifted and reorganised to create a final order for the information you have researched. Cards can be various colours to identify importance. There are however some drawbacks for using this method: a) Difficult to transport b) Can easily get out of order, unless appropriately stored c) Difficult to relay information to an audience †¢ Highlighting and Book marking This method is most practical when researching with books. If the books are not your own, it does mean that some photocopying is required. Highlighting could be done with different colours to represent importance and relevance. Book marking is to show where highlighting has taken place, this enable you to not have to page through the books again, when you are creating your report. †¢ Writing as you read Most people find this the easiest method when trying to create a report when researching information. The reason that this is found to be the easiest is that the word processing software enable the user to easily edit and move text as you work. Whilst this method eliminates the step of collecting your research and then transposing it to the computer, it doesn’t work for everyone. Not one method is the correct method, and they can be comibined. I myself combine all of the above methods, when researching, organising and reporting information. 3a) For your own organisation (or one you know well), describe the procedures that need to be followed when archiving, retrieving and deleting information. Your answer should cover procedures for both electronic and paper-based information. Information storage, retrieval and destruction procedures for my company are detailed within the Records Management Policy (Appendix 2). For us records are defined as either relevant or Non-relevant. Non-relevant records, either electronic ore paper, have no legal requirement to be kept and are therefore required to be disposed of as soon as is practical. Archiving – dependant on the Record type, will define for how long the record should be archived before it can be destroyed. The retention period is determined by referring to the retention schedule (Appendix 3) †¢ Archiving (Electronic based) Within our organisation there is no process required for us to archive our emails, as this is automatically done and managed through our email programme. For other electronic documents there is a specific process to be followed: All records need to be logged on the appropriate Business Log with all relevant information and the folder appropriately names with the destruction date at the end. The files themselves are not actually archived but continue to be held on the electronic drive until the destruction date. †¢ Archiving (Paper based) 1. Use the standard filing boxes 2. Do not store non-relevant records . Complete the box label (include the destruction date as defined by the Retention schedule) 4. Remove the Bank’s copy of the bar code 5. Stick the bank’s copy of the bar code to the Master Record Form 6. Use the bar code Master Record Form to record what is in the box and its destruction date. 7. Contact the Barclays National Records transport department to orga nise to collection of your archive boxes. 8. Send a copy of the Master Record Form to the Barclays National Records Department, remembering to keep a copy for your own records (in case of a retrieval request being received) Retrieving (electronic based) When a retrieval request is received, the leadership team has 24 hours to identify the records to be retrieved. The formal retrieval of the records should take place within 5 working days of the request being received. To retrieve the record: 1. Refer to the Business list of Records to determine which folder the information is stored in. 2. Go to the folder and retrieve the record. 3. Send to the requester, as defined within the request. †¢ Retrieving (Paper based) When a retrieval request is received, the leadership team has 24 hours to identify the records to be retrieved.

Zero Based Budgets Essay Example

Zero Based Budgets Essay Example Zero Based Budgets Essay Zero Based Budgets Essay Zero-based budgeting starts from a zero base and every function within an organization is analyzed for its needs and costs. Budgets are then built around what is needed for the upcoming period, regardless of whether the budget is higher or lower than the previous one. Because of its detail-oriented nature, zero-based budgeting may be a rolling process done over several years, with only a few functional areas reviewed at a time by managers or group leadership. Zero-based budgeting can lower costs by avoiding blanket increases or decreases to a prior periods budget. It is, however, a time-consuming process that takes much longer than traditional, cost-based budgeting. The practice also favors areas that achieve direct revenues or production; their contributions are more easily justified than in departments such as client service and research and development. The name zero base budgeting derives from the idea that such budgets are developed from a zero base: that is, at the beginning of the budget development process, all budget headings have a value of ZERO. This is in sharp contrast to the incremental budgeting system in which in general a new budget tends to start with a balance at least equal to last years total balance, or an estimate of it. What zero base budgeting tries to achieve is an optimal allocation of resources that incremental and other budgeting systems probably cannot achieve. ZBB starts by asking managers to identify and justify their area(s) of work in terms of decision packages (qv). Zero-based budgeting is an approach to planning and decision-making which reverses the working process of traditional budgeting. In traditional incremental budgeting, departmental managers justify only variances versus past years, based on the assumption that the baseline is automatically approved. By contrast, in zero-based budgeting, every line item of the budget must be approved, rather than only changes. [1] During the review process, no reference is made to the previous level of expenditure. Zero-based budgeting requires the budget request be re-evaluated thoroughly, starting from the zero-base. This process is independent on whether the total budget or specific line items are increasing or decreasing. Advantages 1. Efficient allocation of resources, as it is based on needs and benefits rather than history. 2. Drives managers to find cost effective ways to improve operations. 3. Detects inflated budgets. 4. Increases staff motivation by providing greater initiative and responsibility in decision-making. 5. Increases communication and coordination within the organization. 6. Identifies and eliminates wasteful and obsolete operations. 7. Identifies opportunities for outsourcing. 8. Forces cost centers to identify their mission and their relationship to overall goals. . It helps in identifying areas of wasteful expenditure and, if desired, it can also be used for suggesting alternative courses of action. One drawback to zero-based budgeting is cost in terms of managerial time; it takes a considerable amount of time to go through the process of reviewing operations in enough detail to justify costs each budget cycle without relying on past expenditures. One solution to this problem is to create a rolling budget every year and perform a zero-based budget every three to five years, or when a major change occurs within the operation. This allows an organization to benefit from the advantages of zero-based budgeting without an excessive amount of work. Likewise, traditional rolling budgets should never strictly rely on a prior-year budget plus a percentage; consideration should always be given to past numbers. In some cases, a zero-based budget may rely on some prior numbers where it is overwhelming to create a budget from scratch. Ultimately, the process gives top management the opportunity to judge the performance of managers in terms of allocating resources efficiently and effectively, and gives managers more responsibility in developing their budgets. An organization should not feel that all budgets must be developed in entirely the same manner. Some departments can utilize an in-depth study of a zero-based budget while others can use a rolling budget. This is a way to spread the extensive work over a number of years instead of concentrating on one certain year. Many organizations have implemented the system in some form or another and found that it did not work. If properly implemented, however, the process could have a considerable improvement over traditional rolling budgets. The number and nature of decision packages varies from organization to organization; it is not uncommon for large organizations to identify several thousand packages. Furthermore, it is often hard or even impossible for top executives to have the necessary knowledge or time to develop and rank priorities for thousands of packages. To alleviate this problem, managers, after ranking their own packages, can have their top executives rank the packages of all the managers that report to them. This approach is used by one of zero-based budgetings pioneers, Texas Instruments. Another solution is for each level of management to rank a certain percentage of packages within its own area of responsibility. In this solution, the first level of management may rank 40 percent of the proposed packages; the next level may rank the next 40 percent of packages, while top management may concentrate on the remainder of the budget Read more: Zero-Based Budgeting strategy, organization, levels, system, style, examples, advantages, manager, company referenceforbusiness. com/management/Tr-Z/Zero-Based-Budgeting. html#ixzz1TgZFF400 [edit] Disadvantages . More time-consuming than incremental budgeting. 2. Justifying every line item can be problematic for departments with intangible outputs. 3. Requires specific training, due to increased complexity vs. incremental budgeting. 4. In a large organization, the amount of information backing up the budgeting process may be overwhelming. The zero-based budgeting system puts the burden of proof on the manager, and demands that ea ch manager justify the entire budget in detail and prove why he or she should spend the organizations money in the manner proposed. A decision package must be developed by each manager for every project or activity, which includes an analysis of cost, purpose, alternative courses of action, measures of performance, consequences of not performing the activity, and the benefits. This approach is different than traditional budgeting techniques due to the analysis of alternatives. Managers must identify alternative methods of performing each activity first, such as evaluating the costs and benefits of making a project or outsourcing it, or centralizing versus decentralizing operations. In addition, managers must identify different levels for performing each alternative method of the proposed activity. This means establishing a minimum level of spending, often 75 percent of the current operating level, and then developing separate decision packages that include the costs and benefits of additional levels of spending for that particular activity. The different levels allow managers to consider and evaluate a level of spending lower than the current operating level, giving decision-makers the choice of liminating an activity or the ability to choose from a selection of levels of effort including tradeoffs and shifts in expenditure levels among organizational units. The decision packages must be ranked in order of importance once they have been created. This allows each manager to identify priorities, combine decision packages for old and new projects into one ranking, and allows top management to evaluate and compare the needs of individual units or divisions to make funding allocations. In this respect, zero-based budgeting is quite different than traditional rolling budgets. Rolling budgets often appeal to people who prepare budgets because they make budget development much easier. Managers can add an inflation factor to the previous years budget and then include any adjustments for major changes. Rolling budgets also give management a concrete number to help make comparisons from year to year. However, traditional rolling budgets have a tendency to create conflict; they can create an incentive to spend money carelessly in order to justify the next years budget. They can also create inefficient operations due to the fact that individual departments or units do not have to justify expenditures based on operations, but only on the prior years expenditures. Zero-based budgeting addresses such problems that can occur with traditional rolling budgets. In zero-based budgeting, each dollar spent by management must be justified with a detailed account of what will be purchased, how many labor hours are needed, what problems will be faced, and so forth. This allows management an opportunity to review operations in depth and make recommendations for changes to if necessary. The zero-based budgeting process helps managers identify redundancies and duplications among different departments, concentrating on the dollars needed for proposed programs as opposed to percentage increases or decreases form the previous year. Specific priorities of departments and divisions are identified more easily in zero-based budgeting. The process also allows for the comparability of different departments as to the respective priorities funded. Zero-base budgeting enables a performance audit to determine whether each project or activity has been performed as efficiently as planned. Zero-based budgeting may require an extensive amount of time, money, and paper work; but it does provide a systematic method of addressing an organizations financial concerns, in turn enabling an organization to better allocate its resources. A combination of zero-based budgets with rolling budgets or some other form of budgeting that spreads the work of justifying new budgets each cycle is one way to incorporate zero-based budgeting without undo stress at the same time for all managers with budgetary responsibility. www. eferenceforbusiness. com/ /Zero-Based-Budgeting. html http The zero-based budgeting system puts the burden of proof on the manager, and demands that each manager justify the entire budget in detail and prove why he or she should spend the organizations money in the manner proposed. The different levels allow managers to consider and evaluate a level of spending lower than the current operating level, giving decision-makers the choice of eliminating an activity or the ability to choose from a selection of levels of effort including tradeoffs and shifts in expenditure levels among organizational units. ://www. referenceforbusiness. com/index. html.

Alistairs Heroism

Alistair suddenly woke up. He looked around. No He may have sworn to say what heard. He must have dreamed. When Alistair listened to it again, he was preparing to fall asleep again. This is a bit silly. Alistair got up from his cold mat as his bed. He has to find something about it. He wears a dirty patchwork cloak and passed the door of a crackling sound. His owner Torbin did not even notice his absence. Alistair quickly ran to the bush where he heard the noise. This week's geospatial Friday, we will enter space through British Guildford to meet Alistair Maclenan. Alistair is the founder of QuarryOne Eleven, a geographical B2B marketing agency, and is the president of UK GeoForum. As a very active participant in the UK geospatial community, Alistair recently wrote an excellent article emphasizing one of the main strengths of integration in Europe. On June 23, the British citizen will answer the question Is the UK a member of the EU or will you leave the EU? This is their first chanc e to decide their membership since 1975 when Britain participated in the then general market at the time and made the last referendum. This is not the first threat to the EU in the near future - Greece almost went to the door last year Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay Mike Todd McKay McLean Alistair McLean Alistair McLean Alistair McLean Charles McLean Moira McMillan Bonnie MacMillan Macrone Michael Madden Chris Carson Madgulkar Vyangicz Machalkar Vyankatesh Madhavan from the storage Maconie Stewart Dr., Cavery restaurants Madhavan Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan Meenakshi Reddy Madonna magazine Pradeep Magic School Bus Magic School Bus Magic tree House Magic Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Magic Tree House Mag ic Wood House Magical Tree House Magical Tree House Magical Tree House Magical Tree House Magical Tree House Magic Tree house magic tree house magic tree house magic tree house A sword of tungsten from Vienna led Amy, Dan and Nelly to Japan and found a clue related to Japanese samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
